How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult since there are two connector pins, and they have different functions however the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the website intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.
I'm not certain what to do, as i believe that i've ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. 5. Tachometer
A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission of your Audi, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses and processes the signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a typical part across the Audi 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU.
